These paintings and studies are part of a series I did in the mid -1980’s, mostly as a challenge to capture a moment quickly. I was concerned with getting the sense of, not only the season, but also the time of day and the action of the moment. The five studies were completed on-site, “in one shot” so to speak, even in Route 8 traffic. The large painting of “Route 8 South” was painted using the smaller study, but I also made trips to the site, French Memorial Park, with the large painting… that was interesting especially when the wind kicked up. "View of the Derby/Shelton Bridge" was done over a number of sittings on the spot in back of the old Housatonic Lumber site. It was a challenging project but I learned a lot about painting beyond my formal art training.
